Scratch the Surface: Sgraffito Platter

Scratching a design in a plate or platter you make on a pottery form

Starts Dec 29

Service Description

In this two-day class you will learn how to use the slab roller to make a plate or platter draped over a form. We'll add foot rings, add an artist signature, and go over techniques the first day. On the second day the clay will be stiff enough to add underglaze, and we will literally SCRATCH AWAY our Colorado aspen design. (See example in photo.) Work will need to be bisque and glaze fired by the instructor with a clear glaze over the design for completion, which will take 3-5 weeks.

Cancellation Policy

Classes are for ages 18 and over unless specifically marked as all ages. Students must be at least 12 to sign up for the wheel throwing classes. A glazing workshop can be added to your experience if you choose this finishing method. You may want other cold finishes depending on the item(s) made. All materials for classes are provided including aprons, but students are encouraged to wear clothes that could get a little dirty. You may want to remove jewelry that you think might get in the way. Additional clay used beyond the amount allotted for the pieces can be purchased. Students may not bring their own clay due to issues that could arise with firing to the wrong temperature. To keep the space and participants healthy, no sanding of your work should take place in the studio. The last part of class will be cleaning and returning items to where they belong. Help to reduce waste and recycle clay that doesn't get used. Remember that clay has a memory and may warp or crack at the high temperatures needed for firing. Use water sparingly as you work to prevent cracks, and choose which pieces are your best to fire. It's good to be willing to remake a piece that you are not 100% satisfied you want to keep. All projects should be signed (and labelled while in process.) NEVER TOUCH ANOTHER STUDENTS' WORK WITHOUT PERMISSION. Clay can be more fragile than you think.
